PARAMOUNT JOURNEY

Shahristan and its Historical Sights

The ancient settlement of Shahristan, sometimes spelled Shahriston and previously known as Kahkakha, can be found in the Sughd province on the north-western side of Tajikistan. Built during the Kushan Empire when the Great Silk Road was in its prime, the settlement served as an important political, economic and cultural center in Ustrushana – a pivotal medieval region in Central Asia.

The ruins of Shahristan and its historical attractions that date back to the Middle Ages are fine examples of Tajikistan archaeology and antiquities. In its heyday, the nearest big city was Bunjikat which served as the capital city of Ustrushana – some 20 kilometers away. A prominent Sogdian city, the once fortified city of Bunjikat and the surrounds were dotted with palaces, castles, and a hilltop citadel. While you are here, you will be able to appreciate the sheer scale of the settlement as it was in its prime. Separated by a valley, the old citadel and the walled city were far larger than any found in Europe during the 7th-century AD.

More recent excavations have revealed that some of the original features and furnishings of these ancient settlements have survived to this day – some over a thousand years old. The archaeological remains include two domed accommodations, a domed chapel, various wooden carvings, a Greek gold coin, a variety of wooden spoons, a Badakhshan ruby inscribed with the Kufian, a slightly damaged musical instrument, and the document of Soghd. Other interesting finds from the ruins can be seen at the Museum of National Antiquities in Tajikistan’s capital, Dunsanbe, most notably a collection of ancient statues.

On the outskirts of Bunjikat and Chilhujra, there are various other ancient castles such as Tirmizaktepa and Toshtemirtepa, that are also worthy additions to your Shahristan and northern Tajikistan bucket list. Both are steeped in history that is waiting to be discovered. Do not miss a visit to the nearby Jarqutan village where you will find the 4th-century Chehel Hujra, one of the best examples of Sogdian structures in Tajikistan.

The mountains of Shahriston, Tajikistan, are really beautiful and they alone are a major reason why locals and tourists alike travel through this region. The Shahriston pass, a scenic mountain road that runs between Khujand and Istaravshan, and along the banks of the Fann River at some points, is one of the most enchanting routes on the planet.
