PARAMOUNT JOURNEY

Panjshanbe Bazaar

Panjshanbe Bazaar, also known as the Panjshanbe Market or Panjshanbe Bozor, is one of the most iconic attractions in Khujand, Tajikistan’s second-largest city. It is also the oldest and one of the largest markets in the country, dating back to 1964.

Taking up prime real estate in the heart of the city, facing the Sheikh Muslihiddin Mausoleum, Panjshanbe Market is celebrated for its excellent shopping opportunities and unusual architecture. Consistently buzzing with captivating sights, smells, and sounds, this authentic bazaar is a feast for the senses and a worthy stop on any Khujand tour.

As Panjshanbe Bazar was first built in the middle of the 20th-century and only completed later, the building’s unique façade is a sign of the times: a dusky pink neoclassical exterior with a gorgeous green entrance dome and an interior mix of Soviet and Oriental design. Amidst the rows and rows of pastel columns are yet more rows of authentic market stalls overflowing with everything from electronics, clothing and household goods, to aromatic spices, fresh fruit and vegetables, and suspended meat products. It is easily one of the best shopping spots in Khujand.

Located along the Great Silk Road, Panjshanbe Bozor has been one of the best things to do in Khujand for hundreds of years. While the name means ‘Thursday Market’, it’s open every day of the week from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. but it is at its prime on Thursdays. Locals travel from surrounding towns to take advantage of the excellent opportunities for retail therapy here.

The saying ‘go where the locals go’ could not be more accurate – the daily Panjshanbe Bazaar is about as untouristy as it gets. Practice your bargaining skills, get a dress hand-tailored for you, have your phone repaired, or simply relax – Panjshanbe Market is perfect for people-watching! We’ll let you in on a secret: it’s the only place in the city where you can try Ambaroy’s Sambusa, Khujand’s local delicacy (a tasty lamb-filled pastry) – so come hungry!
